My Artwork

Overview

My collection 'Mariana' is inspired by the Mariana Trench. The  series of paintings titled 'Fumarole ' are of marine fumaroles (hydrothermal vents). I try to capture the depth of the trench and the activity, life and dynamism of this deep marine environment, that we know so little about.

I really love creating my art work, and it gives me great pleasure to think that someone will get enjoyment from looking at it. Each painting is unique. My paintings are hand painted, and as such they have brush strokes and other textures related to a hand painted picture. The most important thing to me, is that you are equally happy with the art you have purchased, as I am in making it.

I actively post my art (and work in progress!) to instagram, so please check me out there.

This collection is called Mariana, based on the deep marine Mariana Trench. We know more about the Moon, than we do the Mariana Trench. The thumbnail is from series of pictures is called ‘Fumaroles’ and focusses on the marine fumaroles (hydrothermal vents) where hot gasses emanate from deep in the earth and vent out into the deep cold sea. This extreme environment change is an area of life and activity. In response to the changing conditions mineral deposits form creating the hydrothermal vents. This picture tries to capture the mystery, life and activity in this little understood marine realm.

Lithos

The subject is focussed on the rocks and nature. The dominant colours of these beautiful artworks are tones of light-pink to dark-pink with lesser gold and white (rose quartz), browns and golds, or purples and blues (amethyst) reflecting the colours found in semi-precious gemstones, which highly prized around the world. These stunning and beautiful artworks will draw your eye.

This collection is called Lithos, based on the word ‘lithos’ in Ancient Greek, meaning ‘stone’.

The series titled ‘Rose Quartz’  focusses on the stunning textures, shapes and colours of rose quartz. Rose quartz is a variety of quartz, where trace amounts of titanium, iron or manganese (some rare forms have phosphate and aluminium impurities) have entered the crystal lattice, and result in the beautiful colour of rose quartz we observe. Other minerals such as rutile and dumortierite may also be present within the mineral, enhancing its beautiful appearance. The gemstone will often show colour banding and colours can range from light-pink to pink to red. Gold often associates with quartz. In places the colour is so light it is indistinguishable from clear quartz. The banding reflects the growing crystal structure as the space in the vein expands, allowing more crystals to develop. This artwork captures the beauty, colours and textures of this beautiful mineral.

The series titled ‘Amethyst’  focusses on the stunning textures, shapes and colours of amethyst. Amethyst is a variety of quartz, where iron has substituted for silicon in the crystal lattice structure. The gemstone will often show colour banding and colours can range from blue to violet to purple. Gold often associates with quartz. In places the colour is so light it is indistinguishable from clear quartz. The banding reflects the growing crystal structure as the space in the vein expands, allowing more crystals to develop. This picture tries to capture the beauty, colours and textures of this highly prized mineral.

The series titled ‘Brown Travertine’  focusses on the stunning textures, shapes and colours of brown travertine; the result of geological metamorphism, which is the process of changing rocks over time with heat and pressure. This picture tries to capture the beauty, colours and textures in this incredible earth process.

Eden

The subject is focussed on Eden; the beautiful garden of heaven on earth.

This collection is called Eden as it is based on the ‘Garden of Eden’, also referred to as the ‘Terrestrial Paradise’ or the ‘Garden of God’. Adam and Eve were placed here to tend to the garden and protect the tree of life.

The pictures radiate beautiful, sometimes muted, tropical colours, dominated by orange, blue and green, pink and yellow with gold set on a white background. These colours reflect the exotic paradise garden. The picture plays with tight and loose form, organic structures, and concepts of scale, to reflect the memory this part-visible, earth garden.

This series of pictures titled ’Floribunda’ focusses on the sumptuous beauty of the flora (plants and flowers) and fauna (butterflies) of this exotic, terrestrial paradise. The colours and forms capture the essence of this paradise garden to which man longs to return.

The series of pictures titled ’The Passion’ focusses on the eating of the apple from the tree of knowledge. The Passion has religious and human overtones, which both blend and divide. Not only does 'The Passion' represent great desire and longing, it also encompasses suffering; man, in recompense for his actions (eating from the tree of knowledge) he must suffer, bear and endure, just as God incarnate on earth. The strong, exotic colours are representative of this paradise garden and the emotions this evokes. The colours and forms capture the essence of this paradise garden to which man longs to return. The series radiates beautiful, muted, tropical colours, dominated by orange, blue and green with gold set on a white background. These colours reflect the exotic paradise garden.

The series of pictures titled ‘Summer Haze’ focusses on the receding garden of Eden, distant on the horizon, in the haze of summer; as if it had all just been a beautiful, distant dream. Summer is the culmination of growth. Man has developed as far as he can here. This artwork represents a subconscious memory within us, a feeling of vague recognition, something familiar, but not quite touchable. It also represents a beautiful desire, longing, a passion, to go back to this exotic dream that is now denied us while we face the reality of our lives. The muted, exotic colours are representative of this dream of the paradise garden and the emotions it evokes. The colours and forms capture the remembered essence of this paradise garden to which man longs to return. The picture radiates beautiful, muted, tropical colours, dominated by orange, blue and green with gold set on a white background. These colours reflect the exotic paradise garden.
